Materials needed:
Thrift Store purse, preferably Vintage. Check my inventory for potential deals!
Mod Podge
Glitter (the finer the better)
Paint Brush (preferably the foam kind)
Newspaper
Regular scrap paper in sheets
1. Lay out newspaper (we don't like mess and we DEFINITELY don't like wasting glitter)
2. Put your purse on top
3. Figure out your design, and apply a stencil, or tape, or whatever you are using to mark the lines. If you're using a stencil you can draw on your purse with Sharpie to mark the design. I like to use purses that already have a design, like the checkerboard one I used for this project.
4. Place a THIN layer of Mod Podge (not too much) ONLY on the areas you want to cover in your first color of glitter. If you're doing a design, be careful not to get the mod podge (acting as the glue) on anywhere but where you want to glitter, or your colors will mix.
5. Place a sheet of scrap paper over the newspaper and under your purse.
6. Pour glitter. Don't go crazy, but definitely use enough of it to cover.
7. Dump purse onto sheet of scrap paper, freeing loose glitter, use paper as a funnel to reapply to your purse, and do this a couple of times until all of the glue is covered. When you're finished, dump one last time and funnel that glitter back into the jar -- glitter is expensive, y'all!
8. Let dry and repeat with other colors.
9. Use a hot glue gun to apply rhinestones, feathers, scrapbooking stickers/cardboard cutouts, and whatever else you want! Use puff paint to apply words, letters, and other designs. We write our Krewe name and the year on every single creation.
10. Let dry and VOILA! If you're like me and super impatient, a blow-dryer works wonders.
That's it! Please comment below and let me know what you think. And absolutely send me pictures of your creations, to diyables@gmail.com or tweet us at @diyables.
** Special thanks to the Mystic Krewe of Nyx for allowing us to write about them, and for them being the best Mardi Gras Krewe in New Orleans!
